3 Tips for Staying Injury-Free in Vancouver’s Winters
Brrr! It’s cold here in Vancouver and there are hints of snowflakes falling outside at the moment.
Today I tweeted a few tips to keep from injuring yourself while shoveling snow, but here are a few more things I thought of related to the cold weather that’s visited us.
How to prevent injuries while shoveling your driveway.
1. Get a grip.
Get a pair of good shoes or boots with great tread. Or even better, grab a pair of Yak Trax or something similar. When temperatures start to rise and hover above and below zero degrees, it makes for a great recipe for slippery ice on the ground.
2. Consider the weight of what you’re shoveling
Shovel small amounts at a time. Vancouver’s snow tends to be wetter due to warmer weather, making it quite heavy!
3. Practice good posture
Squat with your legs hip-width apart with your knees bent and back straight. Lift with your legs. Do not bend at the waist. Step in the direction in which you are throwing the snow.
